The No-ghty list & low toxin haircare
This post is for all the ingredients out there hoping to get a shot at being a part of our Creed and Colour products. Before we even get started, some prerequisites must be met, including; 100% vegan, cruelty-free, responsibly sourced, and of course, ingredients that benefit and aid hair care. We pride ourselves on providing low toxin haircare to people by excluding many chemicals. Still here? Great! Let’s see how you do with the No-ghty list.
Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as artificial preservatives in cosmetic and body care products since the 1920s. Most ingredients in cosmetics tend to be biodegradable, so these chemicals are added to prevent and reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and mould, increasing the shelf life of the product. Unfortunately for parabens, plenty of studies have shown that negative effects of parabens can far outweigh the preservative powers, from harm to fertility, increased risk of cancer and more. So it’s a definite no from us…dawg.
Sulfates are derived from chemical compounds where sulfuric acids react with other chemicals. Essentially, this is an inexpensive product to create lather, giving a stronger impression of cleaning power. Sulfates are more or less controversial as opposed to being outright bad for you, but with a proven track record to cause irritations in eyes, lungs and skin…we’ve decided not to take any chances.
Among the most used chemicals in the world, phthalates are colourless, odourless, oily liquids that are most commonly used as “plasticizers”, which are synthetic ingredients used to soften plastics that would otherwise crack and be breakable. This just didn’t fit with our low toxin haircare model. In haircare and other cosmetics, Phthalates are used as gelling agents that help lubricate and soften other substances, increase spreadability, enhance absorption, and help to make fragrances last longer. Phthalates are known to have a number of side effects, potentially causing premature birth, infertility in men and women, obesity and possible risk of cancer. With a track record like that, we will avoid that one!
No Mineral Oil
Any oil extracted as a byproduct from petroleum is likely to get a bad wrap. The great benefit of mineral oil is that it prevents water and moisture loss in the skin (scalp and hair follicles too). However, given the costs and pressures of capitalist greed, the refinement processes have been attributed to some mineral oils causing complications…not limited to clogging our pores in the skin. So, as per usual, we’d rather stick on the safe side.
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and other foods. For some, this ingredient can cause a number of complications, possibly even lethal for many others. For the cosmetic industry, gluten acts as an emulsifier and stabilizer – meaning it can mix substances and then keep them mixed. We remain gluten-free to ensure as many lovely heads as possible can safely use our products.
Phew! Take a breather, you deserve it!
While these are just some of the ingredients that we keep out of our products, we are even more proud of what we put in them. Our low toxin haircare, cruelty-free and plastic-free products are something we are super proud of. You can find more information on what ingredient we do use in our ingredients list.
